Coventry City FC were formed in the year 1893 and were elected in to the second division in 1919, however they struggled in the division early on as they suffered relegation in to the third division north in 1925. After spending a number of year playing in the third division south, the club gained promotion back into o the second division in 1937. They came close to promotion in to the top flight in several years including in 1938 and 1939 as they finished the season off in fourth position.
Coventry’s pre 19060 managers included Dick Bayliss, Billy Frith, Harry Storer, Jack Fairbrother, Charlie Elliot, Jesse Carver, Harry Warren and Billy Firth returned for a second spell between the years 1957 and 1961.
The club won the division three south title at the end of the 1935 – 1936 season and finished runner sup of the fourth division at the end of the 1958 – 1959 season.
