The sky blues had a new manager at the club during the 1990 – 1991 season as former England captain, Terry Butcher, took charge at the club as player manager. He saw his Coventry city side finish off in 16th position. They enjoyed a decent run in the league cup as they finished off in the quarter finals of the competition however suffered defeat in the last eight against eventual winners Sheffield Wednesday. The sky blues could only manage a third round finish in the FA cup during the 1991 – 1992 season as they suffered defeat against Cambridge United in the third round of the competition. They were poor in the top flight as they finished of fin 19th position.
The sky blues made a small by but significant improvement in the premiership during the 1992 – 1993 season as they finished off in a comfortable 15th place. They bowed out of the FA cup in the third round as they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Norwich city.
The 1993 – 1994 season saw Coventry exit from the league cup in the third round as they suffered defeat against fellow premiership club, Oldham Athletic in the competition. They were in decent form in the league as they enjoyed a mid table finish of 11th position by the end of the season. Mick Quinn in prolific form in front of goal for the club through out the season.
