Coventry City finished the 1994 – 1995 and 1995 -1996 seasons off in 16th position as Ron Atkinson made several changes at the club. Atkinson was outstanding while in charge at Coventry City. He saw his Coventry side suffer a narrow defeat in a replay against Manchester City in the fourth round of the FA cup. City saw many players come through at the club including Magnus Hedman, Gary McAllister and Darren Huckerby.
Huckerby set the premiership by storm with his electrifying pace and was seen as one of the future talents of English football. The sky Blues narrowly escaped relegation at the end of the 1996 – 1997 season as they finished it off in1 7th position. They ere much improved during the 1997 – 1998 seoans as Gordon Strachan guided the club to a decent 11th position finish as they were in the heart of the premiership mid table.
They reached the fifth round d of the 1997 FA cup as they suffered defeat against Derby County in the fifth round after extra time in a thrilling 3-2 encounter.
They did one better the following campaign s they reached the quarter finals of the cup competition, crashing out against Sheffield United, after playing two matches against the side, the encounter had to be settled on the penalty shoot out as the blades came out on top of it 3-1.
